| Founded by Justus Griffin, in 1873,
we are one of Canada’s oldest companies! Justus was
a young soldier returning from the Riel Rebellion in Canada’s
west. His original plant was located on King William Street,
near Hughson in downtown Hamilton. Over the years, a number
of partners came and went, and the plant relocated to Rebecca
Street, near James Street North. By 1930 or so, brothers Bert
and Ken Richmond had assumed ownership of the Company. Motivated
by a fire, they constructed a new plant at 29 Rebecca Street (photo above),
which still stands today. (If you look over the door, you
will see “Richmond Building” engraved in the stone
over the door.)
In 1955, the Richmonds sold their business
to a young entrepreneur, Don Seldon. After serving overseas
during WW II, and having held positions at McMaster University, and in the advertising
department at Westinghouse, Don was ready to try his hand
at running his own business. Over the years, he spent most
of his time managing Vernon Directories, a city directory
publishing company acquired by the Richmonds years earlier.
Vernon's remains a subsidiary to this day, publishing directories
throughout Ontario and Quebec. For more information about Vernon's city, street or business directories, or their CD products, please click here.
In 1967, Don was joined in the business by his eldest son,
David. Before long, David assumed responsibility for the
day-to-day operations of the printing company. In 1984,
David was joined by his brother Stuart and together they
managed the business until David's retirement. In 1989, the company moved to its current location on Frid Street.
In 1998, Seldon Printing acquired W.L. Griffin Printing
Limited. Founded by Wilfred Griffin (no relation to Justus),
the company was the city’s leading full-colour printing
company. The new company, Seldon Griffin Graphics Inc. became
one of the regions’ leading full-service
print suppliers.
2005 brought about continued changes with the retirement of David Seldon. At the same time, Bruce and Barry Staz joined the company. As the
former owners of Staz Communications, a well-known printer
in Hamilton’s east end, the Staz’ bring a vast
amount of expertise to the company as well as a new group
of important clients.
